RestoringVision, a global nonprofit and member of WHO’s Global SPECS Network, partnered with Elucid, a social enterprise improving health and economic wellbeing for rural cocoa farmers in Ghana, to bring vision screenings and free near-vision eyeglasses to farmers in the Asetenapa Cooperative. At a single mobile clinic in Akyem Nkronso, 315 people were screened and 62 received glasses, most diagnosed with presbyopia, a common, treatable age-related condition that quietly ends people’s ability to do precision work.
The job here went beyond documentation: shooting both stills and video, and conducting the interviews myself to get beneficiaries’ actual stories on record, not just their faces. Agyekum Joseph, 52, works two demanding jobs — cocoa farmer and electrical rewinder, repairing fans and motors, work that depends entirely on sharp near vision. Before his glasses, he described routine repairs becoming “blurry or cloudy,” even losing the ability to read his Bible.
Solomon Nyarko, 48, a cocoa farmer of fifteen years, described the same loss in his own words: “Everything seemed to clump together, and I couldn’t see clearly.”
Full post-production followed — editing both the photography and video from the shoot into the finished pieces RestoringVision and Elucid used to tell these stories publicly.
